Boil the fish fillets in a pan with water and a pinch of salt until they are cooked through. Drain the water and let the fish cool.
Once the fish has cooled, remove the skin and any bones. Use a fork or your hands to break the fish into small flakes. Set aside.
Heat mustard oil in a pan over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
Add the chopped onions to the pan and sauté until they turn golden brown.
Add the ginger-garlic paste and sauté for a minute until the raw aroma disappears.
Add the chopped tomatoes and green chilies to the pan. Cook until the tomatoes are soft and mushy.
Reduce the heat to low and add turmeric powder, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for a couple of minutes.
Add the fish flakes to the pan and gently mix them with the spice mixture, ensuring that the fish is coated evenly. Cook for 5-7 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
Sprinkle garam masala over the fish bharta and give it a final stir. Cook for another 2 minutes.
Remove the pan from heat and transfer the fish bharta to a serving dish.
Garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves.
Serve the delicious fish bharta hot with steamed rice or roti. Accompany it with lemon wedges for a tangy twist.
